You’ve probably heard the lore that olde timey overshot weavers wrote down their threadings but rarely wrote down a treadling. 

That may have been because they simply used the threading AS the treadling, but even if you don’t have the threading written down at all, you still can treadle overshot in perfect star fashion simply by reading the cloth.

Sounds like magic, doesn’t it? It feels a bit like magic as you’re doing it, too! 

It all comes down to “reading the cloth,” which is a skill that will serve you well no matter what structure you’re weaving, and weaving overshot without a treadling is a perfect way to develop the skill.
