Stripes can transform a project from boring to gloriously fascinating. But they can also be complicated to design. How do you create a stripe design that will look good and coordinate with your draft?
That’s the subject of our Stripes series!
Stripes: Design Principles dives into fundamental concepts in design, and explains how to apply them to stripes. By the end of it, though, you won’t just be creating wonderful striped projects! You’ll understand how to lay out any project. Symmetry and balance, proportions, rhythm, motion – these are all timeless principles that apply to far more than just stripe design.
Because it’s easiest to understand these concepts if you’re not juggling stripes and woven pattern at the same time, this class will focus on stripes in plain weave, 2/2 twill, and other drafts that blend warp and weft colors evenly, without much woven pattern.
Part 2 will cover coordinating stripes with more complex drafts.
You’ll learn:
- How to choose the best color palettes for your intended purpose
- Warp stripes vs. weft stripes vs. both
- Proportions between stripes – how to choose and use them
- Symmetry and balance: when to design with symmetry and how to handle asymmetric designs
- The different types of stripe rhythms and how to decide which to use
- Motion: how the stripes will guide the eye
- Tips for troubleshooting stripe designs
- Tips for winding, warping, and weaving stripes
